Sponsor Highlight: Unveiling the Story of INTERSOURCE by STARK

In the ever-evolving world of interior design and flooring, few names stand as tall as INTERSOURCE by STARK. With roots dating back to 1938, when Arthur and Nadia STARK laid the foundation with a vision of delivering unparalleled carpets and rugs, the company has evolved into a beacon of excellence in the industry.

For Nancy Nelsen-Flom, Showroom Manager at INTERSOURCE by STARK, her passion for interior design and creating holistic spaces began at a young age. Her father owned a floor covering company and she consistently looked up to their staff designer. After spending some time studying health and physiology in college, she realized that she wasn’t following her true passion. After a push from her cousin, who she also considered her mentor, she decided to let her heart lead her career and hasn’t looked back.

We had the privilege of sitting down with Nancy to discover more about INTERSOURCE by STARK, their diverse product offerings, unique industry trends, and their involvement with the Pillsbury Castle Project.

A Legacy of Craftsmanship and Quality

“Our journey began in 1938, driven by a passion for providing flooring solutions characterized by craftsmanship, quality, and design. STARK is still family-owned and run by the third generation of Starks — and that same desire still runs deep in our blood,” Nancy shares.

In 2023, STARK took a significant step forward by acquiring INTERSOURCE, Inc., thus giving birth to INTERSOURCE by STARK. This strategic move further solidified their position in the market and opened new avenues for growth and innovation.

“At INTERSOURCE by STARK we specialize in furnishing and installing high-quality flooring for both residential and commercial applications. With a rich history spanning 27 years, we've earned a reputation for delivering next-level service, backed by a team boasting 240 years of combined experience,” Nancy explains.

Their service area extends across North America, with their reach even stretching as far as Dubai, a testament to their global footprint and commitment to serving clients wherever they may be.

A World of Possibilities

Delving into the array of products they offer, Nancy expands on their diverse portfolio. “We furnish and install all flooring except for tile and stone. And when I say tile, I mean ceramic tile or porcelain. We provide carpet, luxury vinyl plank, hardwood, recycled leather, woven vinyl, and cork,” she elaborates. INTERSOURCE by STARK also delivers to the athletic world offering turf, flooring for indoor soccer fields, home gyms, yoga studios, and more.

The acquisition of INTERSOURCE has further expanded their repertoire, particularly in the realm of area rugs, offering clients an extensive selection to choose from. “And then there are the custom capabilities — about 20% of the sales from STARK are custom,” she explains. “They’re able to take roll goods and make fabricated area rugs, taking other area rugs, cutting them down, and changing the edge details. They have really cool organic serging that looks like hand serging but isn't as costly.”

Selecting the Perfect Flooring

When it comes to selecting flooring or surfacing, Nancy emphasizes the importance of taking a holistic approach. “We consider factors such as the client's aesthetic preferences, budget, and long-term plans for the space. Our aim is not just to sell a product but to enhance the overall experience of a space,” she says.

They primarily work directly with designers, contractors, and architects to understand the needs of the client and how they can best service their requests. Whether it's budget determination or considering factors like pets and kids, their approach is rooted in providing personalized solutions tailored to each client.

Flooring Trends Today

With 35 years in the interior design industry, Nancy has seen trends come and go, but a few are speaking louder than others right now, “It seems like things are moving lighter and fresher on the floor,” she states. “Color pops are also on the rise with area rugs.” She continues to explain that trends in flooring are often regional and you’ll find varying popularity across the nation.

Clients are also increasingly considering ease of use when deciding on materials for flooring, “We're seeing fibers become more engineered so that they release soil easier and are more practical,” she describes. An example of this is blending wool and polyester to bring the price down.

“I do see engineering getting better also with the visual of luxury vinyl plank that everyone cringes about because when it first came out, it did not look very good,” Nancy says. “Now it's so easy to clean, it's so practical, and hits a great price point. We’re now putting it into multimillion-dollar homes.”

INTERSOURCE by STARK and the Pillsbury Castle Project

As the exclusive area rug and carpet sponsor for the ASID Design Home 2024 in Partnership with NARI, INTERSOURCE by STARK brings their expertise to the forefront, weaving their style seamlessly with the home's historical elements. “I couldn't have been more excited when the opportunity came across my desk,” Nancy says excitedly. Their contributions will span several rooms and environments throughout the home utilizing a range of colors and materials while showcasing their ability to work with over 30 designers simultaneously.
