WELCOME
to the Pillsbury Castle Project, ASID Design Home 2024 in Partnership with NARI
Welcome, guests, to the Pillsbury Castle, the home of the American Society of Interior Design Design Home 2024 in collaboration with the National Association of the Remodeling Industry. 30 designers and eight remodelers have transformed this home over the past 9 months and this public tour celebrates the best of remodeling inspiration, interior design, and preservation craft.
This 12,000-square-foot historic Tudor Revival was built in 1903 for Alfred Fisk Pillsbury, son of Pillsbury Co-Founder John S. Pillsbury. He shared this home with his wife Eleanor Pillsbury where they hosted lavish parties, housed their expansive art collection, and devised plans to make Minneapolis the beautiful city it is today.
Alfred and Eleanor lived in the mansion until they died in 1946 and 1950, respectively. Since then, the home has served as housing for seminary students, the offices of an architectural firm, an advertising agency, an Airbnb, and a private home.
In March of 2023, Matthew Trettel and Ryan Hanson purchased the home with the intention of saving it from being one of many period mansions now being torn down in and around Minneapolis. This is where they will raise their family, gather community, and honor the Pillsburys by serving as stewards of the property, ensuring it stands tall for another 120 years.
Today, you’ll experience what lies behind Castle doors in a self-guided tour. Take the time to let your eyes wander as you notice each detail in every room. You’ll explore more than 30 custom-designed rooms all carefully remodeled, restored, and curated to respect all of the original aspects while updating the layout and technology for today’s lifestyles.
As you begin your journey, we have a few kind requests:
Everything you see is for display only. Please avoid touching decor, furniture, and wallcoverings, tempting as it may be. Swatches will be available to interact with periodically throughout the tour.
All floors can only be accessed by stairway at this time. There is not an elevator in the home yet.
In every room you will see a sign with a QR Code. Here, you can access the audio tour, a sourcebook of all the products you see, and a description of the room through the eyes of the designers and remodelers. All audio tour scripts are also listed on the individual QR code pages.
